Last month (June 26th) the Australian army officially retired the last of its UH-1 ("Huey") helicopters. Australia began using the UH-1 in the 1960s, and has since replaced them with more modern models (UH-60, AS-350, Etc.) But over 3,000 UH-1s remain in service world-wide, and refurbishing and upgrading them is a big business. The UH-1 is seen as a reliable aircraft, and with engine, airframe and electronics upgrades, it is competitive in terms of price, and performance, with many new helicopters. Many nations just want a cheap, reliable helicopter, and the UH-1 is expected to fill that need for another decade or two.
