The war over the Army's new wheeled LAV-III armored personnel carrier is already getting hot. Critics charge that the tracked alternative (M-113) would cost half as much and be ready all but immediately, and that it is proven technology while many of the LAV-III systems have never been built. United Defense, which would build the M-113, is protesting the contract award which could delay the project.--Stephen V Cole
