The US Army has determined that it needs $125 million to fix a problem with the Oshkosh 8x8 Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck (HEMTT). Some 12,000 of these trucks use a split ring system, and this ring can break loose and cause the tire to "come off explosively". There have been nearly 30 accidents over the last decade caused by this problem. A new bolted design has replaced the split rings in trucks made this year, but the Army wants to retrofit this system to all of the older trucks.--Stephen V Cole
