Hagglunds of Norway has designed a new combat engineer vehicle based on the Leopard-2 chassis to meet requirements of several European armies. The vehicle is fitted with a dozer blade, an excavator arm (including a grabbing claw and lifting hook), and a single machinegun (of whatever type the customer wants). Combat weight will be 59 tons; another 3 tons of extra armor and spall liners could be added. Sweden needs between three and eight vehicles. The Swiss need between 15 and 20. The Netherlands wants between 15 and 20 units. Denmark wants between ten and twelve. Rheinmetall of Germany has developed a competing design.--Stephen V Cole
