Lockheed Martin has upgraded the first of six tethered aerostat radar balloons along the southern edge of the US, and will upgrade the other five over the next year. The upgrade includes the new L-88 Airborne radar which has a range of 200 nautical miles when the balloon is at an altitude of 15,000 feet. The site at Deming, New Mexico, was completed first, and the balloon at Yuma, Arizona, will be the next.--Stephen V Cole
