Infantry: November 10, 2000

The Army has delayed implementing the new MOLLE pack (Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment; it replaces the older Alice Pack) by a year due to problems with its design. The probe-and-socket system that connected the pack to the load-bearing vest forced all of the weight onto the soldier's lower back, which caused severe back pain during long marches. C Company of the 1st of the 21st Infantry has been conducting extensive tests with a modified MOLLE pack supported by a padded belt. The tests are to conclude at the end of November.--Stephen V Cole
