Venezuela plans to replace 100,000 old FAL 7.62mm assault rifles with new 5.56mm weapons. It has invited bids from all over, although it appears that Belgium, China, Russia, India, and Singapore are the most likely bidders. Columbia has expressed alarm that the surplus rifles will end up in the hands of drug cartels and Colombian rebels.--Stephen V Cole
