South Korea is considering the American AEGIS and the European APAR phased array radar systems for its new KDX-3 destroyers. The Pentagon has gone so far as to provide Congress with a formal warning that the $1.2 billion sale may go through. The South Korean Navy has said it wants AEGIS, but the South Korean Ministry of Defense has insisted on a competition with the European system in an effort to get the best deal.--Stephen V Cole
