In northern Afghanistan, Uzbek and Tajik warlords continue to attack Pushtun tribes. Some of the Pushtun have been there for centuries, but others came north when the Taliban drove out non-Pushtun people. 

The interim government is gathering 6,000 volunteers, from all over the country, in the capital for training to form the first infantry division of the new national army.

There are about 5,300 American troops in Afghanistan, and some 1,100 of them are fighting in Operation Anaconda near Gardez. 

The interim government would like to see 20,000 foreign peacekeepers to help keep feuding warlords and criminals at bay. At the moment, the UN is only talking about trying to double the current peacekeeping force of 4,500 to 9,000 troops. Most nations are reluctant to send their troops to Afghanistan. 

A bomb went off in the market place of Khost, a city east of Gardez that is used an American staging area. Locals said it was a terrorist attack. The bomb went off at night and there were no casualties.
