Britain admitted it has spent nearly three billion dollars Afghanistan operations so far. It's very expensive for European troops to operate there, for a lot of air power is required (transports and warplanes) and a lot of material must be flown in. Moreover, you need highly trained, career infantry to succeed in Afghanistan, and European nations don't have a lot of troops that fit that description. 

Attacks against aid workers in the south and west continue. Pushtun tribes involved in the drug business tend to be the most hostile to foreign aid workers. With all that drug money, the local warlords want to be the only source of "aid" and don't want any foreigners wandering around and looking at what is going on. The warlords don't want anyone from the central government nosing around either.

A bomb went off near the US embassy in Kabul. There were no injuries. Terrorists keep trying to operate in Kabul, but much of the population is hostile the terrorists and frequently report suspicious activities.
