UN attempts to embargo Angolan diamonds, the chief source of revenue for the rebels, have proved ineffective. The diamond trade brings the rebels several hundred million dollars each year, and rebel held areas are know to be visited by dealers in illegal arms. Some of these shipments, usually from Eastern Europe (where enormous cold war era stocks remain), have been intercepted. But most apparently get through, as well as military equipment of all kinds, including portable anti-aircraft missiles.
