A new UN report says that the UNITA rebels in Angola have been able to sustain their fight due to widespread violations of the 1993 UN arms embargo. The rebels pay in diamonds, and reportedly paid the late President Mobutu of the former Zaire, as well as President Eyadema of Togo and President Compaore of Burkina Faso to allow weapons shipments through their territory. Most of the weapons and ammunition were bought from Eastern Europe through brokers. --Stephen V Cole
