On June 8, a British military attach, Brigadier Stephen Saunders, was shot and killed when his Rover car was ambushed. On June 9, British Scotland Yard detectives arrived in Greece to help investigate the assassination. Meanwhile, the Greek urban guerrilla group November 17 took responsibility for the assassination. A statement from the terrorist group accused Saunders of helping in "NATO attacks" against Serbia during the Kosovo War. AFP quoted a Greek spokesman as saying that ballistics tests run on ammo cartridges found by police "confirmed the bullets had been fired from the same .45 caliber pistol used by November 17 in five other killings between 1980 and 1997." November 17 also said it was responsible for several other recent attacks, including the bombing of the Dutch consul's residence, rocket attacks on three foreign banks (May 5) and an attack against the German ambassador's residence (May 16). November 17 takes its name from the date the Greek military junta attacked and killed several student demonstrators during a student protest (November 17, 1973).
