Turkey launched a diplomatic attack against a UN Security Council resolution that extends the UN peacekeeping force on Cyprus. Turkey argued that the "Turkish Cypriot state" (the so-called Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus) deserves "equal sovereignty" with the rest of Cyprus (which the Turks call the "Greek Cypriot state"). The UNFICYP force was extended until December 15. UNFICYP was created in March 1964, as a UN response to ethnic riots on Cyprus.
