  The  UN came through with $2.2 million to pay the 650 soldiers most of the money owned them for most of the money owned for peacekeeping duty. The money originally paid ($1,028 per month per soldier) was stolen by officers in the Guinea Bissau army. This triggered the rebellion. The money has not been recovered. The UN felt it was better to pay twice than to have a civil war in Guinea Bissau.
