US spy satellites watched North Korea carefully for years, using information culled from the increasing number of refugees and defectors from the north. Many parts of the North Korean nuclear weapons program were thus found, including over 70 tests of the high explosive detonator used for nuclear bombs. The data was so comprehensive and massive that the North Koreans didn't even try to denounce it.
