The six month amnesty for Turkish rebels expired with only 140 Kurdish rebels accepting the offer. The Turkish government estimated that there were about 4,500 armed Kurdish rebels. Many of these rebels have fled to northern Iraq. There are some Turkish troops in northern Iraq, who maintain a nervous peace with the Kurdish government in the area. There are also some Turkish commandoes in northern Iraq, but restrict their operations to trying to keep an eye on Turkish Kurdish rebels living in Iraq.
