UNMIL troops are already deployed in Grand Bassa County (a MODEL rebel stronghold), Nimba County (partly control by MODEL and the former Government forces). Other units have been deployed in western Liberia (controlled by LURD). The Capital, Monrovia and its environs are also secured by the peacekeepers.

The disarmament process was recently suspended, to allow the troops to make adequate preparations for the establishment cantonment sites around the Country. The only cantonment site for former Government fighters is established in Camp Scheifflin. The Pakistani troops deployed in Tubmanburg will set up another cantonment site there.

UNMIL maintained that the disarmament program will resume on January 20th 2004. Over 40,000 combatants are expected to be disarmed and demobilized by UNMIL. - Adam Geibel
