Over 500 people died in rebel violence during December, the bloodiest month in the five year old Maoist rebellion. Total deaths were 505 (368 rebels, 64 policemen, 36 civilians and 30 soldiers.) Nearly 3,300 rebels were arrested and another 7,800 surrendered. Many rebel arms caches and bases were captured or destroyed.
