Iran released the last of the Iraqi prisoners-of-war that it had been holding since the early 1980s. Some 395 Iraqis were sent to Baghdad. Iraq handed over 251 Iranians it had been holding for nearly as long. Both countries now claim they hold no more prisoners from the war, although an Iranian investigation commission says there at least 900 Iranian POWs still unaccounted for. It is thought that thousands of Iranians are still held in Iraqi jails for political and criminal offenses.
