 The demise of Saddam Husseins government in Iraq was tremendously popular in Iran. The presence of an American army next door in Iraq is also popular with most Iranians, because it makes the religious conservatives nervous. All of this has put the religious conservatives on the defensive, and made the reformers more bold. The conservatives are now more willing to negotiate the surrender of some of their power.
