In Pakistan, the head of the air force and 16 aides were killed in an airplane crash in the northwest.

In Kashmir, continued use of artillery along the Line of Control has, from 1999 to 2002, some 80,000 people on the Indian side have fled their villages, and only half have returned. The rest continue to live in refugee camps.  Last year, about 150 people have died from the artillery fire on both sides of the Line of Control. Elsewhere in Kashmir, a rebel mine killed four civilians. 

In the last sixty days, Indian troops have killed 55 Islamic militants trying to get across the Line of Control in Kashmir.
